Supporting the Wild Uplands Project

Bringing new art to the 2025 City of Culture

Wild Uplands is a new, summer long series of artworks created and installed in the moorland of Penistone Hill Country Park, near Howarth in Yorkshire.

Wild Uplands features four leading art installations from renowned artists, each taking inspiration from the local landscape and Yorkshires industrial heritage.

As part of this celebration of the landscape, and the wider City of Culture 2025 celebrations in Bradford, we were asked by environmental artist Steve Messam to help him construct ‘Tower’, a 10 metre high metal structure, upon which we would clad local sheep fleece, to celebrate both the role played by sheep in physically shaping and maintaining the surrounding landscape, as well as the importance of wool in the industrial history of Bradford.

Using our Layher scaffolding system, we were able to design and build a structure which rose over the Yorkshire moors, upon which Steve and his team could clad the raw fleeces of over 500 locally bred Gritstone and Lank sheep.

This was a fantastic opportunity for our team to do something a little different, and play our part in celebrating the landscape and the history of the area. You can find out more about Steve’s work, and his history of creating unforgettable experiences in nature, using the links below.
